100 Proof Press Stamps!

My little friend wanted to share a little Valentine love with some fellow artsy type friends. I am a HUGE fan of....gifting is not about the price as much as it is about the thought. And, this being the year of all gifts begin handmade....this was perfect!

We went to one of the "Everything is a Dollar" type stores, purchased a couple of packs of the big pink erasers. Kind of an old school...school supply. I love the smell the texture the pleasure of using one of these big erasers for the first time. Nothing better.

Then we went to my handy-dandy stash of 100 Proof Press Stamps and picked one of my personal favorites, the Artist Supply Cup, #1970-R. Love it!

We used permanent black ink and colored in the heart with a red Sharpie!

Too cute!!

One of my many organization flaws begins with business cards. Every creative event...purchase of handmade....or meeting of a fellow artisan, I collect their business card or some form of future contact. These business cards, scraps of paper, receipts, brochures begin to stack up. For many years I threw them in a box...not good. Upon entry into the box....I never could find anything. It became just a box of paper. Useless.

So, I tried something new. A simple little blank journal (I just made one with my combine machine) became the new form of organization.

The book filled and filled and filled. Now, it has no more space.

The best part....it worked! I simply staple any form of communication on a page, pen a little note of reference if need be, date and point of contact.

No deep rooted forms of organization...old school stapler and pen.

New year...new journal.

Saw this photo of the "Aunt Bea-ish" type lady and loved it.

She goes with me everywhere....always organized.

Many blank pages to fill for 2012....can't wait.

The Epicenter of Creativity--Tinsel Trading Co.

After years of drooling over magazine photographs, visiting their website in a much stalking way and knowing everyone I respect in the creative industry finds Tinsel Trading the mecca of all things ribbon....I too, have now officially drooled, touched and swooned over one of the most beautiful stores in the world.

Yes, the store window was more beautiful than I had envisioned.

There was an area in the back that had a table with old boxes of beads, bedazzlements and fishbowls filled confetti type garnish. Just grab a bag and get a scoop!

Stunning!

But, truly the best part of the store was simple the abundance of ribbon. Every shape, color, type, texture and age was there for the viewing. Beautifully arranged by color and and displayed in and on vintage shelving and storage.

Bins of stuff!

Plus, there were walls of miscellaneous adornments. Buttons, felt, leaves....way to much to list or consume. You just have to sit and ponder.

Loved the display of old wooden spools everywhere!

More ribbon than you can imagine.

This type of store makes you want to sell all worldly possessions, purchase the store and hope you will live long enough to create as much as your head begins to spin out ideas.

It IS the epicenter of creativity!

Yes, one more check off the old creative bucket list.

E-Reader or Book?

I love technology! Now, that has been said....I love books!

I have collected these books to read for the next few months. My Father-in-law always gives me a gift card to a bookstore for Christmas and it is one of my favorite gifts to go and redeem. There is nothing more pleasing than to curl up in a chair and read a great book. Of course, my taste in books is not always on the best sellers list, nor would any literature/English teacher find what I read too profound....but, within the confines of my brain I now choose my own list of favorites and find them outstanding! With this in mind, it is always fun to share good finds with others...so, here is the library list of choice for the next few months....with my reading reasoning....

1. "You Don't Sweat Much" by Celia Rivenbark - she is one of my very favorite writers. Lives in North Carolina and has a newspaper column. Her writing is one of the very few reads that has made me cry with laughter. Her sarcasm and dry wit are outstanding. She writes what we wish we all could say. Highly recommend any of her books to put a cackling laugh out loud, knee slapping grin on your face.

2. "How To Sell Your Crafts Online" by Derrick Sutton - I have not read it...just perused. But the style of the sales are all directed to succeeding on Etsy. It seems to have an "Etsy for Dummies" flavor to it. Can't wait to read and apply.

3. "The Mom's Guide To Running A Business" by Michelle Lee Ribeiro - I'm about half way through it. This book just provides good sound inspiration. Most all featured entrepreneurs are moms and somehow juggle children, family and their business. Nice to read their ideas on how to do it. Plus, the children have inserted their opinion as well. Interesting.

4. "Linen Wool Cotton" by Akiko Mano - This is 25 simple projects to sew with natural fabrics. Have not tried anything, but one of my goals this year is to sew a wee bit....we'll see how that goes.

5. "I Am Cute Dresses" by Sato Watanabe - yes, another sewing type book, but these style dresses I never see in a store, so I for some reason, think I can make it myself. Once again, we'll see.

6. "Suck Your Stomach In and Put Some Color On!" by Shellie Rushing Tomlinson - A friend suggested this book to me. I think it is a humorous view point of southern living and style. It appears that it might be a life guide of some type. I feel massive amounts of humor will be involved. Can't wait.

7. "Design It Yourself Clothes" by Cal Patch - reference #4 and #5 above, yet I've gone on to believe once I've mastered the art of making their dresses...I will pattern my own. I feel this could be a stretch from every possible angle on my part. Here's to hoping!

8. "Where Women Create Book of Inspiration" by Jo Packham & Jenny Doh - another great book to see how creative people live and their work spaces. I have only just begun, but every page is visually delightful. This will be a slow read...on purpose.

9. "Signature Styles"by Jenny Doh - a book about 20 creative stitching people. Beautiful! Kindred spirits is all I can say.

Now my opinion of books vs. e-readers: I truly love both...

Pro Books: texture, smell, color, size, mobility, success is seen and more tangible for the writer

Con Books: none

Pro Reader: convenience, size, access to unlimited books, super cool piece of technology

Con Reader: battery dies, you are subject to finding power at the most inopportune time, nothing worse than climbing in the bowels of some gym to curl up on the floor to finish the last two chapters of a book while sitting in four day old popcorn and candy wrappers at a power source

Table Cloth Window Treatments!

Since the dust bunnies were building a zip line in my windows and blinds, I decided to clean it all out. Dusted, washed, cleaned, etc. Yuck!

I'm not a huge fan of anything that falls under the heading of "window treatment". Those two words sound so formal for my personality. So, I just cleaned and pressed three table cloths and hung them on dowels over my breakfast windows. Plus, all I have to do is pull the blinds up under the cloths and I'm sitting in a tree house.

Once again, my personal affection for this is quite simple....nothing matches!

Free-Styling Embroidery!

Just doing some free styling embroidery. The pages were very old and brittle not necessarily the best for embroidery, but I loved the color. My experiment began with the thread. I found this spool of yarn/thread/whatever you call it at an estate sale for .25. Loved the colors and the texture.

The thread was somewhat too thick for the fragile paper, but I forged through anyway.

It ended up kind of interesting. Now what do you do with it?

Obviously a space dedicated to the beauty of art...open for viewing from two sides. But, this display stopped me in my tracks. From across the street I saw colorful objects beautifully hanging behind a window, but upon closer observation...it was paper cups!

Who would have thunk it?

I am always amazed at how simple objects uniquely decorated hanging erratically create such beauty. Simplicity is excellence!

Antique Archaeology Nashville

Yes, I finally got to visit the Nashville location of one of my favorite shows "American Pickers"!

My best-est took me there over the holidays and...

it was like walking into several episodes of the show.

Really cool "picks", as they say, and many I had seen on television.

These are just a few shots of the finds.

I think I remember this bicycle find.

Absolutely loved this folkey type sign!

I so wanted one of these carnival game thing-ies!

I vividly remember this episode.

Who could forget?

Of course, any Mike and Frank establishment must include a few gear head items.

After much perusing, I made a few purchases. It was then I had the good fortune of meeting Dustie. Cute little chick working at the store and wearing the cutest bracelet. I commented on it....and guess what? She makes them. Placed my order right at that moment. She has an etsy store here.

I apologize for the dark photo...but, found it hard to lighten up (the sun was not cooperating). The bracelet has a dark brown leather band with a chippy black painted metal key hole. Awesome.

The bracelet was fastened by an elastic black band that you wound around an old mini skeleton key. More awesome.

I think the more I wear it...the more worn it will be. I constantly get compliments!

Trying to organize the new year with elements of gratitude. New Year Resolutions include thanking people with handmade.

My first installment is this little bookmark!

Staying true to my mixed media, whatever style I used a 100 Proof Press stamp, on a playing card, sewn to a bingo card and stitched a hanging tag and added rick rack. So, simple...yet unique.

Just below this cut glass pitcher stamp I added a button and a handwritten sentiment.

Christmas Traditions!

I am a Mary Englebriet fan. This limited edition print was acquired (I have no idea how) 7 or 8 years ago. It has sat on my mantle every year since. It is truly the essence of all things Christmasy to me. Then, to add to my awesome print are these precious, old plastic snow globes I found at a thrift store about 3 years ago. Love the combo!

Some traditions are simple and necessary. These four items are my "go to" favorites.

Stain or No Stained?

This is a small stack of the many cloth napkins I am ironing at the moment. I absolutely love vintage linens and these soiled, stained, somewhat worn napkins are no exception.

The use is evident in many different ways. Oddly enough, I have come to appreciate all the years of spots and how they came to be a part of this linen history.

Just sitting here mulling over their imperfections and have come to love the darkened circle as much as the bright colors. There have been many years a stain soiled linen would get chucked into the rag bag...no more. Stains are just as memorable as the fabric or the napkin. The spots now indicate use, and more importantly the likelihood that something fun happened to cause the stain.

Yes, if I couldn't laugh at myself this would be waaaay too serious. I have been completely absorbed in preparing my home for entertaining.

FYI: I have cleaned small sub-cultures of dirt-life that had started mini eco-systems in crevasses of most every corner of my home. The dust balls had evolved into tumbleweeds. My vacuum has refused to suck up anything else until I give it a un-electrified sabbatical. Plus, I have purchased gallons of Windex.

I generally think of myself as a semi-clean person.....my was I wrong. Obviously, the "sweeping the dirt under the rug" syndrome has been going on quite a while.

FYI: Upside to this story....my dwelling is now CLEAN!

Sunday is my last soiree for the Christmas season. A simple family gathering of 22 people. All eating a meal I have cooked. Insert: quote above.

It took the consultation of two of the best cooks I know to guide me through this process. Menu is now set...food purchased....some food made....and table set.

Another small trauma was the need for dishes. I refuse to use paper goods. Now, here comes the easy part for me....gathering the dishes. My first thoughts were to make everything match....but, I don't own 22 identical things. So, I took the route of not one plate, glass, butter pat, napkin or piece of silver will match. Mucho easier for me. Although, I did have to take a few plates off the wall to add up to the magical 22.

FYI: Finally, my hoarding has paid off.

My table that seats 22 people looks like a quilt of beautiful mish-mash! I love it!

Fun necklace! I love the colors!

The middle pendant was the joint of the carpenter's ruler.

Cotton Fields of Home!

On my way to Artsy Chicks an item was checked off my "Bucket List"!

I have always wanted to get up close and personal with cotton plants in a cotton field. Just happened to look to my right....noticed the upcoming exit...and boom, I was pulling up into a tractor type entrance of the cotton field. Cotton growing in a field is breathtaking.

I wanted too pick some, but felt a cotton police might be watching and I would be escorted out to a cotton gin and tried for treason of cloth.

Any who....I took photos...and I thought it was outstanding!

Repurposing A Man's Starched Shirt!

I recently was asked by an icon of my fair city to do a small segment on a mid-day local television show. My topic was to be 'inexpensive ways to wrap Christmas gifts'. Knowing I am cheap by most every one's standards, this was going to be easy peasy!

The night before the segment (I premeditate everything) I had to pull something together. My 'Big Guy' had thrown a starched shirt in the floor and said, "I don't like this anymore, give it away". Pleasantries to my ears!

My goal was to fill 4 minutes with ways to use this starched shirt....

this is what surfaced.

Project One:

A former jar of mayonnaise, with label removed. Fill with gourmet coffee. Take the collar of the shirt and wrap it around the top of the jar, cross it over and pin a tag made from a paint chip swatch. Add sprig of greenery from shrubbery outside.

Project Two:

The box was a child's shoebox (they are always very graphic and pretty). Glued the front pocket of the shirt on to the lid. Filled the pocket with shrubbery greenery and pens. Tied it closed with a strip of fabric from the hem of the shirt.

Project Three:

Cut the sleeve off. Invert the sleeve, measure the height of bottle of wine, and with sewing machine zip a single stitch across the non-cuffed end. Invert sleeve. Slide bottle of wine through buttoned cuff and tie with a decorative bow. Add shrubbery again.

Project Four:

Get an old cigar box. Cut the button placket off of the front of the shirt. Wrap it around the box and pin. Add shrubbery and ribbon again.

Yep, that is what you can do with a man's starched shirt!

Light and Dark!

Had to share this photo...found a bag of crosses in a basement. I put them on all different kinds of chain. I feel they may have formerly been on rosary beads... don't know. As I made them and hung them on my dress dummy, Lula. The light was streaming in and the shadow made such an interesting juxtaposition of light and dark.

100 Proof Press Stamp!

Finally finished another piece using one of the infamous 100 Proof Press Stamps. With all my work something stitchy is most always involved. I had been looking for some old film strips in my many jaunts through the basements of Americana, and finally found exactly what had been looming in my head. Went to use it....and no. This was not at all as I had envisioned it. Then it came time to select from the wealth of stamping options at 100 Proof Press and there it was a two frame film stamp (stamp # 6353-S)....eureka! I immediately ordered it and above is how I envisioned it. My little stitchiness exploding out of old school film. I think it framed out nicely.

Lesson learned:

Never underestimate the value of using present day wonderful crafting innovations, such as stamps, in addition to the assemblage of vintage.

It can work.

My Dog's Happiness!

Country Living Fair - Georgia, 2011!!

The Country Living Fair was once again not disappointing! Beautiful day....outstanding vendors! My Best-est eagerly hopped in the car early Saturday morning and off to Stone Mountain, GA we went. Truly, we squeal with delight once on the road knowing our next 6-8 hours are going to be filled with a buffet of eye candy. We annually look forward to this event!

Upon entry into the field there is always this mound of pumpkins, gourds and mums! It is the signature element of decorating for the Country Living Fair! If you can spot the pile...you have arrived.

The first tent I see is certainly one of my favorites....Earth Angel Toys! Multiple vendors are represented and it is a feast of creative brilliance!

The entree' into the woods awaits us! There... let the shopping begin!

The beauty of all the vendors that attend is the unending yummy goodies they bring, and how they cleverly display it in the middle of the woods.

Of course, quilts are just randomly hanging in the trees....ahhhhhhh!

Then there is the furniture. The reference "over the top" is no doubt useable. Yet, it is exactly what I want to see. How awesome is this sofa?

Just a glimpse of the magnitude of goodies.

The attention to detail is delish! This tree had handmade paper poppies wrapped around the trunk.

We were one of many shoppers. My Best-est and I even enjoy watching fellow shoppers. Everyone attends in their most interesting and creative ensembles. I wanted to poll one out of three people to ask where they shop. This crowd is fashion forward!

These gals are some of my favorite! I knew they were coming, but within minutes of our arrival I look up and BAM! there they were. Love them! Joy "the Junk Queen" Thornton, the one waving, is the proprietor of United Gift Shop, one of my favorite junking spots! The other two are wonderful booth owners at her shop. Anne Prettyman, the one with the sunglasses, is quite the junker herself, my numbered, wooden storage shelf was a purchase from her booth. Gina Garst is wearing the navy blue jacket and always has great stuff in her booth. My coffee table was formerly hers! Great Gals!

This furniture ensemble is truly my favorite! I love me some red.

Little Stamped Journals!

Once again 100 Proof Press has provided the perfect utilitarian stamp for little journals. I was in JoAnn's just the other day...saw this little bundle of four journals for $2.50. Too cute!

Happened to have a tiny little verse type religious book eaten up with "old" and mice nibbles. The pages just fit the cover perfectly.

Grabbed some aged tablet paper, stamped a dust pan (2560-Q),

chair (2601-Q) and artist's cup (1970-R).

The zig zag stitch holds the yellowed page and a single stitch was sewn around the stamped image.

This is the back cover to each journal.

The inside paper was a lovely shade of grey with the white image at the bottom of each page. Too cute!

I tied some green baker's twine around each for a little interest.

Funny...what starts out as a cute little collection or hobby can blossom into an overwhelming, out of control mass. A nice odd number of units, maybe 5-7, becomes a triple digit inventory that almost makes you and your stuff an episode topic on "Hoarders." A simple item on a "hunt" list while out foraging estate sales, flea markets and yard sales begins to negate the purpose collecting completely.

I first found this awesome old blue, pottery container....great for umbrellas. It has held umbrellas in my foyer for years....until...

a weirdo affection for canes, croquet mallots and badmitten racquets began to ease out the umbrellas. Take note of photo...no umbrellas in blue pot. I can't wedgy another wood handled anything in my blue pot. The collection has absorbed my umbrella storage space and I now lean them in the corner. The mail and me get wet on occasions.

A simple bowl of dice that made me smile could now support all the craps tables in eight Las Vegas casinos. I love the color and sound dice make when klinked together. A bowl of dice just makes me happy! But now, just breezing by my coffee table while flipping on the TV, and a couple of dice will bounce across the great room and my dog yells "seven".

Once again, out of control collection or hobby.

It's A Sampler...or a Quilt...or....

All the little pieces and bits become my form of a sampler. Create lots of little mini pieces of "whatever you want to call this". Have no intention any two will belong together. Make a bunch...30-40! Spread them all out on a table and piece together which ones belong on one piece of art. It's kind of a oddly pieced quilt.

Last Fall about this time, my favorite junking haunt in Ringgold, GA, United Gift Shop, with the awesome owner of Joy had a yard sale.....whoop, whoop! I saw this wood shelving unit with numbered shelves and the infamous "I see something I must have" tingle commenced. I got there a little late so why in the world this was still there only is answered with the "junk angels" were waiting on me. I immediately snapped it up!

This shelf has sat in my garage for one year....until Wednesday. I lugged it downstairs, cleared out a hole, and began filling it with all my ephemera. Little did I know I had that many bingo cards. It was a blast to revisit all the paper goodies I have accumulated over the years. Who knew I had this much stuff? By simply organizing this junk I gained 4 square feet in my studio. Outstanding!

The top was perfect for all my jars of buttons, thimbles, parts, hardware, etc. I think this shelf may be the best investment I've made in a long time. Love it.

Nothing feels better than organization....and finding goodies you forgot you had.

The Needle Nest of Columbia, TN is awesome!

My opinion of needlepoint from birth to August 6th, 2011, 2:37pm:

I thought this was an old, tired, somewhat dated, yet beautiful art form that I would like to try someday; but until I saw an interesting, achievable, small project that I might possibly finish (not known for completing long term projects) will not do. Attempting to create a seat cover, bell ringer, or massive fireplace embellishment with dark, floral, Victorian colors was not going to happen. I felt everything seen in regard to needlepoint was boring.

My opinion of needlepoint as of August 6th, 2011, 2:38 pm:

I'm a dumb...dumb! My best-est friend mentioned several times I needed to visit The Needle Nest in Columbia, TN. She felt I would love it! Who knows me best? My best-est friend. While participating in a art show in Columbia, she took me over to the quaint little store, The Needle Nest.

Walked in the door and was visually brought to a "mouth gaping" moment filled with glee. All the walls were displayed with hip...fresh...appealing needlepoint graphics and kits that were screaming, "make me, Alexa!"

One room had a wall of thread (wish I had taken a picture, my error) that made me tingle. Beautiful colors, textures and examples of outstanding, vibrant and "kick-butt" finished work filled the store. I literally wanted to sit down and start a needlepoint project that fleeting moment.

It took approximately an hour for me to figure out which of the many projects I wanted to pursue. I knew a simple and small project would be my friend. Keep in mind I DO NOT KNOW HOW to needlepoint. The array of projects was fantastic! I had no idea needlepoint could be so cool. Some of the options of patterns included belts, eye glass cases, jewelry, ornaments, book covers...and what immediately tempted my fancy was the ever so small, yet usable... and a project that might actually get completed....luggage tag. My best-est helped me select thread and my first needlepoint kit purchase was made. Yippee....skippee!

The cute little chick minding the store was terrific (I apologize for not remembering your name, you were great). She clearly enjoyed her job and had no problem explaining and demonstrating a few simple needlepoint "tricks of the trade" to me, the novice. She gathered up my needed supplies once the project was selected, gave me a "cheat sheet" for beginners and I felt like needlepoint creativity was going to commense.

Went home and began my foray into needlepoint!

This is the finished project! I was so proud. This may be my first time to ever complete a "kit" type creative endeavor. Face it, I only made half of a pot holder with my loom kit given to me by Santa Claus when I was 8. Completing something is HUGE!

Disclaimer: Do not look closely Beth Gilbert, needlepoint extraordinaire. I now see the importance of your stitching going in the same direction. I was a bit schizo...but, I enjoyed and loved the process any- who!

Note To Self:

The crafting/creative world does evolve. Do not assume you will not want to participate. Seek out fresh new venues for those who "get" the art form. Just....Do It!

I Finally have MOO Cards!

I absolutely LOVE MOO cards...the mini version especially! When I go to an art show and see MOO cards as the creator's business cards...I know I am going to like what they create.

The size is perfect...half the size of a regular business cards.

A simple template to upload your photos...or select from their adorable array of graphics...add your personal data and you are done.

Yes, another entry about clothes pins....what's up with that?

I do have an odd affection for the world's most wonderful utilitarian tool.

My "picking sister" got me these. A jar of itty-bitty clothes pins in a teeny tiny old mayo jar. They are only about 1"in length. Oh so cute and precious.

Unsure of their future...but, the creative whim will strike. I'm in the just want to look and hold stage right now.

Any ideas?

Kindred Spirits!

Happened upon an estate sale ad that read, "70 Years of Accumulation". What more do I need to know?

The address was a bit out in the country and only 8 miles from my house. This was a Sunday afternoon and I felt everything might be 1/2 price....which is always a good thing.

Took off down the road and found this cute little vintage bungalow in the middle of no where. Only two cars in the driveway and what appeared to be the perfect age home for my likes.

Walked in and found a granddaughter and her mother minding the wares. The Great-Grandmother was scaling down and wanted to get rid of everything. I made the quick scan across the living/dining room and there was the spirit of crafting lofting over two 6 foot fold-up tables. This little lady was my kindred spirit. She enjoyed every form of creativity.

She knitted, did needlework, sewed and painted. All kinds of supplies were laid out like a second hand craft store. It was awesome! Sadness was close...for I felt she would miss this stash of supplies, after a simple inquiry I was relieved. She had twice as much as this saved! Whew!

This was the bundle buried deep into a box of miscellaneous goodies. I unrolled the handmade supply tote....and EUREKA!....

a tote for many, many expensive and fabulous paint brushes! It screamed for me to purchase and paint with our joint kindred spirit!

I am in love with the wooden kitchen chair stamp 2601-Q at 100 Proof Press!

Found this roll of very thin cotton fabric at my local thrift store. Which makes creating stamped ribbon much easier...no seeming strips of fabric together. I am a huge fan of rough and ripped edges, so I just tore several strips about 6 feet long and started stamping.

This would be easy to do with a roll of ribbon as well.

Make gift giving a little creative and unique!

Yep, my little Friend is now 16! We had a small gathering of friends at a local yummy restaurant in Chattanooga named Foodworks. Great environment and even better food!

Just to mark each attendees place, I made hang cards for the girls. For once, Facebook was an awesome resource for little mugs of each gal. So easy, yet whack-a-doodle party funny!

They all had different paper dress, same party hats and I attempted to apply their similar hair. They all kind of have a big head....loved it!

The cards were formerly music flashcards.

We are volleyball fanatics at our house. Live...eat....and breathe...volleyball. Why not have a party and invite the whole team over? But, I have two rules of entertaining...

1. Keep it simple.
2. Keep it special for the attendees.

3. Keep it inexpensive for me.

When I ordered the volleyball stamp 3198-P from 100 Proof Press, it had no purpose in my head. I felt there might be some reason I would need a volleyball stamp...but, none sitting at the end of my crafty fingers. Team colors are red and blue. Knocking back liters of soft drinks, lemonade, and water are a constant with athletes. Getting a different cup each time they want something breaks rule number three for me. Red Solo cups....you can't go wrong!

But, now we need to execute rule number one. Always have these cute little round hang tags at your disposal. Plus, it just so happened that the volleyball stamp fit perfectly on the image space (rule number one accomplished). Write their name on each volleyball and this cup will be used multiple times (emphasis on rule number two and a side hit of rule number three) Yea!

Simple....special...and inexpensive!

C-H-A-T! I found these funky, old sign letters at one of my favorite haunts, Estate Of Confusion in Chattanooga, TN. I simply glued them to some old linen book covers, added a little ephemera, notions and a cute little Corona typed "artfully with friends".

This was recently offered at an art show in Columbia, TN and I know who purchased it. Perfect for Joe and Carol! Friends I like to CHAT with on the lake. I met them through my buddy Edie at the best lake house on Tim's Ford. Chat...chat....chat....too fun!

The Chicago Bean!

It is official...I have been up close and personal with the "Bean" in Chicago. Obviously, the idea of art selection in Chicago is "go big, or go home". Wow, now that is a big silver bean.

The magnitude in size made it awesome. It's ability to reflect the city for miles was fascinating. Once again, my simple minded brain has no idea how this giant bean that looks like liquid mercury is standing on two somewhat small areas.

I wonder....

a. what artistic brain bubble developed in a mind that said the world needs a giant silver bean?

b. who was the city leader that approved a giant silver bean to be placed in the city? That provided some water cooler convo-ing.

c. why are we fascinated to see a giant silver bean?

Don't know...but, I loved it!

Oh Marilyn Monroe! The Statue!

I always thought Marilyn Monroe was larger than life.....now she IS larger than life.

On a recent outing to Chicago, all the talk was about going to see the Marilyn statue....and it was awesome. The iconic pose of Marilyn standing over the air vent with her white dress fluttering in the wind, coupled with her sexy little grin was beautifully captured in this GI-NORMOUS piece of art. Everyone scurried to take their turn to stand next to her leg and have a photo made. The magnitude of the piece made her absolutely stunning.

Every angle of the sculpture was breathtaking. The gentle flow of her dress was so perfect. It somewhat defied gravity.

Her heel was at the top of my hip....I'm 5'10"...now that's a spike heel!

Just an observation...look at the creepster laying on the ground.

This was his vantage point for approximately 20 minutes. He didn't move...only took photo, after photo, after photo....of concrete granny panties. What is up with that? He just rested under Marilyn's huge canopy of her dress and made photos. Hmmmm.

Yep...a cheap yard sale shelf can become an adorable little trinket holder!

Bought the raw wood shelf for .50, had some extra powder pink spray paint (the color fades in my photo, sorry)...

then I stamped the Opium Poppy stamp #5865-W from 100 Proof Press along the edges. If I may offer any advice, do not get caught up in making it perfect. Just plop the biggest "poppy" area along the edge... overlap at leisure...and add three little bold colored dots (I chose blue) and there she is!

Packaging is mucho important to me! As many of you know I am a freak for collecting, purchasing and giving all kinds of junk.

My Rules of Packaging:

1. Put small items in a beautiful cello bag.

(less than .10 a piece)

2. Put an attractive paper topper on the bag.

(this can be created with scrap paper and a clever stamp)

I used a hanger stamp from 100 Proof Press!

Added a cute little catch phrase, "Hang With Me".

Stapled it to a playing card.

3. The MOST IMPORTANT rule of packaging is to keep it inexpensive!

A great stamp on scrap paper with a playing card stapled to a cello bag fits all criteria.

What Great Packaging Does:

1. Ups the value of your goods.

2. Creates a branding image for yourself.

3. Looks awesome!

4. Makes a simple little inexpensive treasure found at a yard sale a cute little gift for a friend.

It is a needle keeper! Had some rather drab khaki/brownish felt that needed something fun to emerge from it....naturally, I thought pig. Simple outline from a cookie cutter with a fold on the booty side.

But, essence of most needle work is a pretty, yet fitting thimble. Stamped this lovely on a piece of muslin and appliqued it on the pig.

Made some simple pages from cream felt...everything with a neat little blanket stitch around the edge.

And, a pearl button tail!

Below is a fun little plastic box I found at a junk store. I filled it with old wooden clothes pins. Very similar to the cute little clothes pin stamp (1454-N) available at 100 Proof Press!

I have an antique booth that I LOVE...LOVE to stock and merchandise, plus, I am the constant gatherer! Through the years I have learned many merchandising tips. The first and foremost important tip is packaging! I feel certain a box of old clothes pins packaged in this cute little box will garner more dollars than a baggy full of pins. Sure a little more time and effort...but, a lot more visual fun and money!

I love me a "Dust Pan"(2560-Q) stamp from 100 Proof Press!

There is something about the basic cleaning tools we've all grown up to see...watch our elders use...and can even be recognized by many generations. The typical dust pan has not changed its shape and use for years. Colors may change...how it attaches to the broom has been enhanced....but a dust pan is a dust pan! I love having a little loyalty in a product! The day someone hands me an electronic device that when hovering over a pile of trash/dust approximately 7-10 inches the electrodes will disintegrate the particles magically into the atmosphere within 2.4 seconds....I might freak.

Let the dust pan be a tool that many, many generations will recognize and use the very same way for years. Call me old fashioned.

I have a friend that loves to sweep! Not one of my favorite items on the "to do list"...but, this little dust pan was perfect to create her some fun note cards. Running down the side of the card stock was little scraps of paper sewn by machine....perhaps scraps and trash that you might sweep into a dust pan.

My First 100 Proof Press Design Piece!

Finally, I have finished my first piece of art using one of the many outstanding stamps from 100 Proof Press. I do believe the best part about being a member of such a gaggle of creative sorts is the diversity in how we see...use...and create with stamps. My creative process has always been quite organic. I begin...let the piles of stuff guide me...glue, stitch, embellish and now stamp to form a unique piece of me.

This piece was done while on vacation at Rosemary Beach! To say "sit a spell" is an understatement of what I have had thrashing through my brain for the last few days. Which came first the need or the stamp? ....hmmm?

Once again, the canvas is layers of old linen book covers and a bingo card adorned with a tiny stitched piece on old bark cloth....then simply, but ever so sweetly, this precious chair stamp (2601-Q). I feel certain I sat in an old oak chair just like this at my Grandmother's house.

Folk Art Found in the Bahamas!

Recently went on a vacation to the Bahamas....woo woo! Had an awesome time. Shared much fun with family and friends. But, one of the highlights, was finding the little women that made things from trash. Yes, the essence of folk art! Love it!

The fantastic little guitar was completely made from coke cans. It stood about 10" high.

But, my all time favorite was the camera! Obviously, coke is the preferred soda of choice. Most everything was red! Any who....notice the front lens is the top of a can....and if you push the button (just like a camera...

Whipstitch Fabrics in Atlanta!

I have been such a bad blogger. Can't seem to find enough time to stay home or create, much less blog. But, I am now in the zone. And, part of the motivational shove comes from my recent visit to one of the most fantastic fabric stores....ever! This story comes with good news....and bad.....

Good News First:

On one of my many treks to watch my favorite friend play volleyball, I cut out some time to visit a store and blog I have stalked for quite some time. This store is like a yummy piece of creative cake. Calming colors embrace you at the entry. Upon crossing the threshold....the smell of fresh fabric and creativity feel your senses. The visual eye candy takes your breath away. Unlike walking into a box store that sells fabric (I will keep the names unmentioned), the customers were different. They were hip and happening women! Cool outfits...most all had some type of handmade accessory...I even eaves dropped to hear them talking about making clothes for their children for heaven's sake. Who does that? The young cutie managing the store was dressed to the nines... and spoke with knowledge and excitement about fabric...not in a horrific dark royal vest over a t-shirt going through the motions of her J-O-B. This store had bolts of delicious fabric, fat quarters and patterns everywhere. Plus, they even have classes in the back! I wanted to sit down and just consume the yumminess all around me.

Now to the Bad News:

I only had about 15 minutes to consume the awesomeness! Boo. My little friend was waiting in the car....hungry....and was about to play volleyball in 90 minutes. So, as you can imagine I put my "scan and conquer" skills in high gear. Touched each and every fabric...asked numerous questions....looked at everything (quickly might I add) and decided upon the above fat quarter fabrics. Now, I feel certain these fabrics are not in a store that sounds similar to: Mobby Wobby, Jomamma's or Flaw-Mart. I also purchased a couple of books (they had a great creative book library) and a do-dad to make an ever so cute pin cushion. It will be forthcoming.

So, with little summation necessary....go to Whipstitch in Atlanta! Terrific!

Once again, my garish need to make everything look like a hobo grabbed all their worldly crafting possessions and slammed their last creation into one glob.....

I have some kind of twisted nature about color....texture...dimension...

and I want it to all surface at the same time.

I fee certain their is some psychological malfunction connected to this is some way.

This has been a fun project for me....nice comments....and hopefully, not a downer for those who might pop in to see the finished project.

Knives to Plant Sticks!

A fun project I offered in my antique booth this past Christmas....simple, but oddly successful.

At a recent estate sale I found a bundle of silver-plated knives. They were heavy....perfectly tarnished....and totally un-use able for the dining table. One bundle of 12....$2.

How can you pass that up?

You can't.

Knives were purchased.

Then with some simple typing and gluing, words of pant-dom were hodge-podged on to the handles. A rip of torn fabric tied at the handle....there you go, a plant stick.

Simple, yet it worked. I'm beginning to get tired of the "word" thing on everything....but, sometimes it does seem perfect. What do you think?

Thrifting....

Inside your head a little voice tells you, "go to America's Thrift Store, I know you are going to find some cool stuff. Always listen to your inner voice, it can often be keenly in turn with the universe of good junk.

This particular day was no exception.

1. Awesome, weirdo, shiny, pink, Asian tablecloth with cheesy fringe.

(it reminds me of the silky souvenir pillow covers of the 50's that represented divisions of the military...or states...or resort cities....kind of cheap looking, but oddly collectible now)

This tablecloth was a vibrant yellow paisley with hand sewn trim. So fresh and fun!

This was my favorite doo-dad! The 4-H plaque was a trip down memory lane for me. I too, was a member of the 4-H club. I participated in many crafts, demonstrations and my primo favorite part of 4-H....was CAMP! I loved the arts-n-crafts shed where I learned to make wood signs, hammer and stain leather....and make oodles of embroidery floss bracelets. Awe....memories.

Upon seeing the plaque I knew it was mine. Upon flipping it over I read, "Alline Seagle camp of 1937". I just envisioned myself sitting on a bench in 100 degree heat, wearing my favorite Hang 10 red shorts with my new "I'm A 4-H Camper" t-shirt and carving this same type of wood plaque. Alline and I could have been kindred spirits.

The Food Warmer!

OK, do you know what the above is?

A food warmer.

This little handy dandy kitchen gadget is fantastic. I never can find one in a kitchen store, but for some unknown reason, they are in abundance at thrift stores. This is the fourth one I have ever purchased....never paid over $2. It seems our difficult economic climate has even hit the second-hand, unused, food warmer retail market, for they have grotesquely skyrocketed to $3. Whew!

What is even more humorous...I don't own one. As a Mom of an athlete, you are always making...bringing large quantities of food for team consumption. Generally a kitchen is not available for cooking...so...the infamous food warmer. I continually donate them to the team in which my little friend is participating.

Recently, I mentioned my great find to a friend and she informed me these warmers are considered hazardous.....OH MY! Thus the reason for their abundance in thrift stores maybe? Not sure, for are are incredibly useful if creating a meal in the hall way of a school or gym. What a shame.

Any who...I will continue to enjoy the pleasures of a food warmer all for $3.

Proud Moment...Again

Motherhood brings moments that make you proud....trust me, there have been many...but when my little friend shows her creative side....I GLOW!

For once...the night before last, my friend finished her homework early (a rarity, might I add). I popped in to check on her and found her cutting...sewing...and creating. I absolutely love to see her rip into a pile of fabric....use the other side of the brain that does not involve structure. I encourage a "free spirit" when killing some creative free time.

This is how it started....she had a bracelet like below. Really cute little elastic bracelet made of multi-colored felt circles and wooden beads. Unfortunately, the elastic broke....but, fortunately....the elastic broke!

The little pile of felt circles were erratically sewn on to a small pouch made out of a linen napkin. No pattern...no guideline...no rules....just cut and sew as it feels, and looks good.

The color palette was fantastic! It brought back very found memories of one of my first Mother's Day presents made by my little friend while in kindergarten. A simple rock with her favorite colors erratically painted to create the most incredible paper weight.

This pouch has purpose!

Vista Print....I Must Share!

Time to share a wonderful resource for excellent paper goods!

When offering art...or any type of goods to the public, I think it is vital to have unique...interesting...and artistic paper goods. I started ordering business cards from Vista Print a couple of years ago and they this company has now become my "go to" source for business cards, post cards, envelopes, magnets, and any other type of representative paper products I might need.

I love handmade business cards, but find them massively time consuming. Occasionally, this is great, but to hang a handmade tag on 75 pieces of art at a retail show, is another day of work. Whew!

So, one day while surfing around on their site, I realized they had the ability to upload photos to any of their printed materials. I created some cards with a photo of my art and absolutely LOVED the quality! The picture was pristine....and the price was fantastic!

Once the process was mastered by myself, I started uploading photos on everything. I now have a collection of business cards, all with a different piece of art. I erratically hang these cards on everything. It's now my business card, hang tag, price tag and product representative...all printed up in one.

Along my path to creativity, many people have shared some great resources.

Obviously I have been reflecting back to my childhood...hmmmm, wonder what that means? Any-who...remember folding your hands together and making the church and people? This action is very vivid in my mind.

I remember sitting in Sunday School and repeating after the teacher "...open the door and see all the people". Ahhhh.....fond memories!

Of course, with any piece of art, your own twinge of sarcasm must surface...for whatever reason. Mine came in the church being made out of a "lotto" box. I'm not sure what this means, but I feel certain some higher scholar whose studied "why people do what they do" would consider a small thesis regarding this artistic effort. Hmmm...

My Christmas Man-tique!

In the midst of some of my Christmas madness, a short reprieve was made to one of my favorite junk haunts and found this awesome chest of some kind.

The drawers were lined with green felt. I feel it was probably a tool caddy of some type....not sure, but I'm channeling a very meticulous man carrying his prized "doo-dads" organized in this little mobile case.

Love...love it as my new jewelry chest! It now houses my "tools of the fashion trade" quite neatly.

But it glowed of "mass production"! So, I gaudy-ized it! If ever you find interesting display pieces...snap them up! You can always use them!

What I have learned about retail.....

1. you may make something outstanding...but, if not displayed in a unique/attractive way....forget it!

2. If you purchase generic store displays....personalize it! Make it reflect your creativity!

3. Never sell awesome displays. I've replaced things over and over again. It gets too hard to find some interesting display pieces, so reconsider putting a price tag on everything.

Just needed to kill about 20 minutes before meeting the family at the theatre....and luckily, a Goodwill store shares the same parking lot. Just popped in there to see what treasure I might find and look....four, perfect, not moth eaten, no peep holes, Bark Cloth curtain panels...in my favorite colors!

Currently they are all in a bag to take to the cleaners.

Can't wait to find a room to hang them in...whoop...whoop!

This little piece of art falls strongly on the "more just may not be better" side of creativity. The moment of assembly in my head looked better than the actual piece in reality. It looks like I took an "over kill" pill...and then chased it with a shot of "too much". Whew. It visually makes me anxious.
